So, Frank. How do you develop a story?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Frank Fiore @ 7:08 PM

That question is asked of me often. Most times it’s long after I have developed a story and finished a book. By that time, my scattered notes – and there are many – have long past provided any explanation as to the actual seed of the story that I have written and how I arrived there.

So, this time, I am trying to answer that question with a new story that I have just over the last several weeks developed and still remember how I did it.

I watch a lot of documentary channels like Discovery, History, American Heroes, A&E, etc for story ideas. Every once in a while, a show appears that gives me an idea for a story. On this occasion, the History Channel is running a series on Wartime Crime.

During the Blitz on London in 1940, a new form a criminal came into being. The ‘Smash & Grab’ and home invaders. The bombing of London opened up a big opportunity to steal when the residents or shopkeepers were huddled in the Underground shelters.  While Londoners were sheltering during the raids, gangs would smash the windows of retail establishments and break into private homes to steal valuables.

I thought this was a basis for a good story especially if I could up the ante to higher stakes? Like stealing the British Crown Jewels during an air raid? How’s that for high stakes?

My first task was to find out where the Crown Jewels were hidden from possible German invasion during the war. Turned out, that wasn’t easy. You see, no one knows to this day where they were hidden. Well, almost no one. And this is where the story gets real fascinating and creates a very interesting story – one based on true events – with secret agents, smuggled nuclear materials and the disappearance of priceless gems, it sounded like the plot from a best-selling thriller – or a best-selling novel?

For more than 75 years, mystery has surrounded where the gems, including the British Crown Jewels, were stashed to stop Hitler getting his hands on them in event of a German invasion.

Theories have included the vaults of an insurance company in Canada, a secret tunnel at a prison in Devon, the Bank of London Vault, the Tower of London – even a cave in Wales.

Now a new book is set to tell the extraordinary story of how the vaults at the Tower of London were emptied in 1940 to hide the Crown Jewels from the Nazis if the Germans successfully invaded Britain.

Author Colin Brown made the fascinating discovery when he was researching how the swashbuckling Earl of Suffolk managed to smuggle to Britain the world’s largest stock of “heavy water” – vital for the development of nuclear energy.

That’s right – nuke materials to build an atom bomb! Story getting pretty cool, huh?

Anyway, the Earl commandeered a British tramp steamer in Bordeaux and managed to “rescue” 26 jerry cans with the help of two French scientists – and the Nazis in pursuit – before the German Blitzkrieg could get to them. WOW !!

General Sir Maurice Taylor, senior military adviser to the Ministry of Supply, wrote to Lord Wigram, the King’s private secretary, at Windsor Castle on July 4, 1940, saying: “I have been racking my brains to think of the safest place in this country to save part of this heavy water stock. Since I am told it is the only stock in the world you will understand my anxiety on the score of its safety. The conclusion to which I have come is that some small chamber in the depths below Windsor Castle would most nearly meet the case.”

But what has this go to do with the Crown Jewels?

The Earl of Suffolk delivered 20 cans of the heavy water into the hands of royal librarian Sir Owen Morshead at Windsor. A week later, Sir Owen wrote to Herbert Hough at the Ministry of Supply, confirming the consignment was safe and “the King knows it is here”.

In his letter, he revealed the secret location of Suffolk’s precious consignment by saying: “It is in the same spot as the Crown Jewels.”

WOW !!

Although the precise hiding place has never been officially confirmed, Mr. Brown thinks it was under a wooden trapdoor in the castle basement where the servants who tended the fireplaces had their offices.

So…I gave all this some thought.  Throw in a young British Army deserter who is well-known at the Smash and Grab and a fence for stolen goods that runs the Black Market on the East End of London and is also a member of the Irish Resistance that the Nazis are providing weapons for and is a Nazi spy…..then throw in a US Army Master sergeant who works with the fence on the Black Market providing US Army goods…and a plan to have a German air raid on Windsor Castle as a diversion for the theft of the Crown Jewels and heavy water…and German airborne troops landing in England to take possession ….and then smuggled out on a U-Boat off the coast of England…

And you have a story.

And here it is……

Based on True Events

Story opens with a truck racing towards the docks of Bordeaux, France in May of 1940 as the German Army blitzkrieg in hot pursuit as it’s smashing its way through France.

The swashbuckling Earl of Suffolk is smuggling to Britain the world’s largest stock of “heavy water” – vital for the development of nuclear energy. The Earl commandeers a British tramp steamer in Bordeaux and manages to “rescue” 26 jerry cans of the water with the help of two French scientists before the Germans defeat France and catches them.

The story then moves four months later to September of 1940 in a British military police post during the bombing of London – the Blitz. At the post, Captain Thomas Blake, is pursuing army deserters. One such deserter that is high on his list is Frankie Fox who he knows is hiding in the criminal underground and he and his confederates are performing ‘smash and grabs’ during air raids robbing homes and businesses while the raid is going on.

During this time Frankie Fox and his partner Stubs Murphy are sitting in a car wearing stolen Civil Defense Wardens insignia and ID. When the bombing starts they raid a high-end London neighborhood and while the bombs are falling around them, steal the valuable personal property.

The two go to the local fence, Paddy O’Banion, to sell their ill-gotten goods. Paddy warns Fox that Stanton Mills, the London Godfather, is looking for his share of Fox’s nightly Blitz escapades. Fox ignores the warning.  At the exchange in Paddy’s East End hideaway, one of Mills’ men is there to collect his share from Fox. He threatens Fox and Snubs and a fight breaks out with the two escaping with the proceeds. Mills puts out a hit on Fox and that night when Fox celebrates their proceeds at a swanky club in London with Stub’s girlfriend.

Meanwhile, Paddy is visited by Captain Blake and asks if he know where Fox is? Paddy declines. He has a better idea on how to use Fox’s skills at ‘smash and grab’.

That night, Stubs and his girlfriend leave the bar and end up in bed. But Mills’ thugs burst in and kill both of them leaving a note that Fox was next.

Later, Paddy is with US Army Master Sargent Buck Mullins. Mullins supplies Paddy and the black market with military rations and other staples. Paddy tells him he has a plan to make them both rich. He needs a jeep and truck and weapons to do a robbery. Mullins asks what kind of robbery. Paddy says the Crown Jewels.

Fox is at a pub and he nearly escapes death from one of Mills’ hitmen. This happens when Captain Blake shows up having him track Fox on a tip and in the gunfight between him and the hitman, Fox escapes.

We find out that Paddy is not just a fence of stolen goods. He is also member of the Irish resistance – the IRA – and a Nazi spy. The Nazis have been supplying weapons to the IRA through Paddy to create trouble for the Brits.

Paddy goes to the German consulate and meets with his handler Hans Von Frederick. He tells him of letter that has fallen into his hands that says where the heavy water smuggled out of France to England is stored. What he didn’t tell Von Frederick was that the place also stored the Crown Jewels. Paddy says he needs a diversionary bombing raid at the Windsor Castle so he and his men can get into the Castel through the help of an aide to Nazi King Edward VIII. Steal the heavy water – and the Crown jewels, unbeknownst to the Nazis – and meet airborne commandos that land near the castle to transport the goods to a U-Boat off the coast.

But he needs a good thief who is not shaken by bombing around him. He asks Fox to meet and lays out his plan to rob the jewels but does not tell him about the heavy water. Paddy says that Fox’s part of the take can pay off Hill and his debt. Fox agrees.

Fox goes to the Windsor Castle with some of Paddy’s men. They are led into the hiding area – a trap door below the aide’s quarters during the bombing raid – and they steal the heavy water jerry cans and the Crown Jewels. When Fox sees the jerry cans he gets suspicious and wants an explanation. He gets none. They get in the trucks and head for the Nazi commandos.

When they get there, Fox is shocked to see Nazi commandos and finds out about the heavy water. He may be a deserter and no fan of the British establishment – but he still was a Brit and Nazis are the enemy. He tries to figure a way to stop the heavy water going to Germany. He escapes.

Luckily, Captain Blake has been tracking him and he shows up and arrests him. Fox tells him about the German soldiers. At first, he is not believed but Fox convinces him to come with him. He shows Blake the commando camp as they are ready to leave for the U-Boat.

They need to delay them so Blake can get the military there. Fox enters the camp and tells on Paddy and the jewels. The commander shoots Paddy in a running car race when the Nazis discover he is leaving with the Crown Jewels. This gives Blake time to contact the military. Fox has to stay with them to find the U-Boat and radio Blake to where they are. He does, and the military Army comes, kills the commandos and the British Navy intercepts the U-Boat.

Fox has turned from army deserter to patriot.

Hot Under The Collar Conspiracy Theories

What is it about conspiracies that get people hot under the collar? Is it the fact that our lives could be under the control of outside influences? Could it be that we do not know the full truth? Who knows… but there are plenty of theories to keep a would-be-worrier worrying for a long, long time. This week we are going to look at some of the strangest theories thought up by the strangest people about… the strangest things. From doppelgangers to black holes… just scroll down and immerse yourself in the crazy world of the conspiracy theorist…

Do We All Have A Twin?

It’s highly unlikely that we live in the sole existing universe. We’re probably in one of many. Physicists have theorized that there could be infinite universes existing next to each other in a sort of giant patchwork quilt, that the Big Bang led to the generation of many other ‘bubble universes’ and that parallel universes hover just outside of our own. Columbia University physicist Brian Greene, author of the book ‘The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos’ says the latter theory supports the idea that we all have doppelgangers.

“The argument for doppelgangers is pretty straightforward. Assuming that space goes on infinitely far, in any finite chunk, matter can only arrange itself in a finite number of ways, like cards in a deck. You and I are just a configuration of particles, so sooner or later we’re going to repeat. Matter can almost repeat its configuration but not repeat it identically. Your physical body may repeat, but your mental configuration can be a little bit different, so there might be an evil version of you, and a version that loves skydiving.”

Is This Life Reality?

Could we really be living inside a computer-generated universe? The Matrix may be an outdated work of fiction, but its concept of an artificial reality still carries weight – even scientifically, perhaps, per a team of physicists at the University of Washington. The team announced that there’s actually a potential test to see if we could be the creation of bored entities who are playing us like The Sims. It sounds totally ridiculous, and of course, causes science-minded people to bristle at terms like ‘intelligent design’ – though in this scenario, our creators aren’t exactly a bearded dude in the sky.

But some scientists and philosophers say that this theory could solve a few mysteries about the universe, like the fact that the exact conditions required to support life are so unlikely in the grand scheme of things. Small shifts in dark energy could easily have caused the universe to explode or implode a long time ago.

It has been said that mega-computers of the far future could greatly expand the size of a theoretical Sim Universe, and that if we’re living inside such a program, there could be tell-tale evidence for the underlying ‘lattice quantum chromodynamics’ technique used by the computers. It could show up as a limitation in the energy of cosmic rays.

Time Is Moving Veeeerrrrry Slowly…

Why are supernova stars viewed at extreme distances moving away from us faster than those that are closer? Some scientists say dark energy is responsible or the acceleration, but others offer a different explanation: time itself is slowing down. Those galaxies only look like they’re accelerating from here, because the deep space telescopes are basically looking back in time to see them. Like the ekpyrotic scenario, it’s based on string theory, postulating that our universe is embedded in a multi-dimensional ‘brane’ (like a membrane) which is floating through a higher dimensional space that we’re unable to detect. What does that mean? Essentially, say the scientists responsible for the theory, time could come to a complete halt, freezing everything in place forever. But not to worry – even if this far-out theory is true, it won’t happen for billions of years.

Are We Living In A Black Hole?

Our universe might be so small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, that it’s hidden inside the black hole of another universe, totally unbeknownst to theoretical sentient beings in that universe. And that means all the black holes so far found in our own universe could also contain doorways to alternate realities. This theory is based on new mathematical models of the spiralling motion of matter falling into a black hole.  The matter absorbed by black holes isn’t necessarily destroyed – it could be expelled, to become the basis for new galaxies, stars, and planets. This could explain the mystery as to how the universe could have started with a singularity in the Big Bang theory – instead of just existing with no explanation, it was birthed by a white hole, the hypothetical escape hatch for matter at the other end of a black hole.

The Secret, Crazy World of Richard M. Nixon

Filed under: Uncategorized — Frank Fiore @ 1:56 PM

Last week we featured some strange conspiracy theories… but people seemed to like them a lot. This week we have some even stranger conspiracies to drop on your doorstep. Yes. These are the conspiracy theories of Richard M. Nixon…  Was he a crazy nut? A paranoid delinquent… or were people truly against him? The truth is that he both kept secrets, and expected others to keep secrets. His secrets were kept for a reason—and he knew why others were keeping secrets about him. Let’s take a look at the list.

Secret Bombings

Laos and Cambodia, the two nations on South Vietnam’s western border, unwillingly provided the “Ho Chi Minh Trail” that Hanoi used to infiltrate soldiers and supplies into the South. Shortly after Nixon took office, he ordered the Air Force to start bombing the Trail through Cambodia. Nixon kept the bombing of Cambodia secret from the American people.

In his memoirs, Nixon tries to explain why he kept the bombing secret from the American people, when it was certainly no secret to the Cambodians or the North Vietnamese. By not acknowledging that he was bombing Cambodia at the time, Nixon wrote, he gave its leader, Prince Sihanouk, a way to maintain his official neutrality on the war, and he made it harder for the North Vietnamese to lodge a protest. The only reason left to keep the bombing secret was political. Nixon knew that revealing it would cause a public outcry

Economic Conspiracy Theory

Nixon didn’t limit his conspiracy theorizing to the politics of foreign policy. Domestically, rising unemployment and inflation dogged the economy and threatened him politically. No wonder his imaginary conspiracy of Jews, intellectuals, and Ivy Leaguers soon encompassed the federal agency that calculates the unemployment and inflation rates, the Bureau of Labor Statistic, and the one official other than himself who wielded the greatest influence on the economy. Who could that be? Why the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, of course!

Haig’s List

From the first day of the Pentagon Papers series, Nixon was worried about what their publication meant regarding his own secrets. Kissinger’s deputy, Alexander M. Haig, couldn’t have realized it, but his speculation about the source of the leak to the Times was bound to make Nixon fear the exposure of another, more damaging, foreign policy secret, one dating back to his 1968 presidential campaign. “Well, I’m sure it came from Defense, and I’m sure it was stolen at the time of the turnover of the administration,” Haig said.

“Who in the Pentagon?” Nixon asked. “I will fire the SOB’s.” “They are all gone now,” Haig replied. “Clifford, Halperin, Gelb.” Leslie H. Gelb had run the Defense Department study that became the Pentagon Papers, Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Morton H. Halperin was Gelb’s boss, and former Secretary of Defense Clark M. Clifford had presided over the completion of the study, which began under his predecessor, McNamara. Haig was wrong. Clifford, Halperin and Gelb did not take part in the Pentagon Papers leak.

Bombing Halt

Three names—Clifford, Halperin and Gelb—had special meaning for Nixon. They had appeared together in print once before, however, in a two-part New York Times series on how President Lyndon B. Johnson switched his Vietnam strategy in 1968 from escalation to negotiation. Clifford, along with “a nest of ‘hidden doves’ at the Pentagon” that included Halperin and Gelb, got much of the credit in the articles for the strategy change, which culminated, just days before the presidential election, in a development that nearly derailed Nixon’s candidacy.  In a televised address to the nation on October 31, 1968, Johnson announced that the North Vietnamese had backed down from their refusal to engage in peace talks with the South, and he had stopped bombing the North. Nixon had begun the final month of the campaign with a landslide-like lead over his Democratic rival, Hubert Humphrey, who as Johnson’s Vice President had suffered in the polls by association with the Vietnam War. As Johnson’s negotiating strategy began to bear fruit, Nixon watched his lead shrink from 15 points in early October to 8 points in late October and finally, on the weekend before the election, to just 2 points.  In the end, he won, but by less than 1 percent.

2017 According to Nostradamus

When it comes to conspiracies there are certain ones that are above the rest. This blog is all about a much-discussed seer called Nostradamus. Nostradamus was said to have foreseen 9/11, the rise of Hitler and several other world changing events. Each year scholars look to see what will happen over the next year. This year’s predictions from Nostradamus are…

An Unstable America

The US is predicted to become increasingly ungovernable as the year progresses. It is not known how this will yet play out, but President Trump has already made it repeatedly clear he will be putting America’s interest first. Many strategists have warned that America will become less engaged in the past and will be more cautious concerning economic and military matters.

There Will Be Peace in the Valley

Nostradamus predicts the two major rivals will sign a peace agreement. These two rivals are Russia and the Ukraine. However, it remains unclear as to when and how this will take place with other European nations predicted to support the deal.

The Rise of China

This Asian powerhouse is predicted to make bold moves to cure the “economic imbalance“ in the world and its actions will have far reaching consequences. However just last month, there were predictions that China’s economy is living on borrowed time with Beijing facing a series of internal and external threats. A leading analyst predicts China’s housing and construction sectors will begin to slow by next year. Will 2017 mark the end of communism in one of the world’s most closed off countries?

Bye, Bye Italy

Italy will also suffer some tough times ahead, with economic turmoil increasing and a deepening banking crisis. This is likely to bring around an end to the European Union.

Kim-Jong Who?

Nostradamus is also said to have foretold that the North Korean dictator will see his little empire crumble during 2017. Will his long subjected people rise up and wipe him away? Will we see a reunified Korea?

The Obama Conspiracy

When it comes to conspiracies there are certain ones that are above the rest. This blog article is all about one the biggest conspiracies ever to become publicly known. The OBAMA conspiracy. These “rumors” about the President have plagued him throughout his Presidency… Do you believe the President of the United States could be hiding secrets like these?

Obama is a secret Muslim:

This one began right after he took the stage at the 2004 Democratic convention, with chain emails alleging his “true” religious affiliation. The rumor soon found its way onto the popular conservative online forum Free Republic, and took on a whole new life in the years to come.

Obama once aided the mujahideen:

Harlem pastor and professional race-baiter James David Manning contended that in his younger days, Obama went undercover as a CIA agent to facilitate the transfer of cash and weapons to the Afghan mujahideen in the ’80s, thereby aiding what would become the Taliban.

Obama redecorated the Oval Office in Middle Eastern style:

Driven by his fierce sense of anti-American interior design, Obama got rid of the red, white, and blue decoration scheme in his White House office.

Obama married a Pakistani guy:

Correspondent Jerome Corsi posted a video in which he claimed to have “strong” evidence that Obama was once married to his college roommate from Pakistan. The smoking gun: Photos of the chums in which the future president is “sitting about on the [Pakistani roommate’s] lap.” For years Obama wore a gold ring on his left hand. Was it his gay-wedding ring?

Obama and the Koran

Obama’s ring has a Koranic verse on it. Did you know that? The very same ring, which Obama now wears as his wedding band, is allegedly emblazoned with a key phrase in the Islamic declaration of faith: “There is no god except Allah.”

Secrets of the Past

Some of the worlds least famous conspiracy theories, are some of the strangest. Take these theories for example. From the secret cults of the rich and famous, to secret sleeper agents—do we really know what is going on in the world? Do we have any idea about the truth? Let’s find out what the conspiracy theorists already know…

Secret Societies, Secret Rituals and the Rich

All conspiracy theories stem from the idea that a cabal of rich and powerful men control the world. This is true, in a way, but it’s nothing but a bunch of entrepreneurs and investors fighting each other for market shares. Can you imagine if the rich and powerful donned robes and got together to perform ridiculous rituals? The truth is much weirder. The Bohemian Grove gatherings, in which members — which have included U.S. presidents — gather to perform rituals before a 30-foot-tall idol shaped like an owl.

The Dead Zone

This theory takes many forms, but all comes back to the idea that in some secret government lab, they’re doing human experimentation without our knowledge. If it was an episode of the X-Files, it’d probably involve some shady agency secretly collecting DNA samples from the public to breed with aliens or create super soldiers or some shit.

Secret Sleeper Cells

It’s easy to forget that you don’t have to go back that many decades to find an America haunted by the idea that there were communists hiding under every bed. Sure, the West was in an arms race with the Soviet Union — that part was real — but the truly paranoid were sure that their neighbors, school teachers, and grocers were sneaking into their basements at night to roll out invasion maps. When their comrades arrived at America’s borders, they’d be ready to help.

Making Patients Sick… For Profit

According to conspiracy theorists, Big Pharma is an evil machine that makes people sick for profit. You might be surprised to learn that they’re right … about the last half of the sentence. Because let’s face it, we all already believe the rest of it.

Do You Know About The Secret World We Can’t See?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Frank Fiore @ 1:17 PM

As this is the week of Halloween… I thought it would be interesting to share some of the more frightening conspiracy theories. Don’t read these in the dark. Turnover, put the light on, sit up and read through these slowly. You may find them making more sense…. Than you could have ever believed. Does our world truly exist? Are we subject to the whims of a superior race of people? What is this life we are leading? Let’s hear some suggestions…

Project Bluebeam

This very controversial, and dangerous conspiracy theory, holds that the New World Order will use advanced holographic technology to create a false flag alien invasion and/or a worldwide religious “awakening” to achieve servitude by the masses and acceptance of a one world government and religion and possibly depopulation efforts as well.

The Fermi Paradox

The Fermi Paradox is an argument originally made by physicists Enrico Fermi and Michael H. Hart, who presented an apparent contradiction between how many alien civilizations are thought to be out there and our lack of evidence for their existence.

Do Humans Hold The Signs of Alien Life in Their DNA?

Is it possible that an intelligent species encoded a message or signature into the very structure of our DNA? There is evidence that suggests that this is the case.

Is This Real? Is It Fantasy?

This theory supposes that because of the overwhelming likelihood of technological singularities occurring in the universe, it is quite likely that advanced civilizations–either us in the future, or aliens in a distant galaxy–have created or will create simulations. Since the number of these simulations would be in the billions, some scientists have admitted that it’s quite likely we are living in some sort of a computer simulation.

The Disappearance of Flight MH370

Filed under: Uncategorized — Frank Fiore @ 8:15 AM

One of the great conspiracies of recent years has been the disappearance of flight MH370. Since it’s disappearance there have been hundreds of rumors about the plane. Some say it was taken by North Korea, others say Vietnam took it. Some say the plane can be found on the moon—some even think the plane became invisible. This blog article is all about some of the wackiest, and most plausible reasons for the disappearance of flight MH370. What do you think happened to that plane?

North Korea Took it By Force

It didn’t take long for the most secretive nation in the world to be dragged into the MH370 rumor mill. Shortly after the plane disappeared, several conspiracy theorists questioned whether North Korea might be the “missing link” in the mystery. They pointed to South Korea’s claim that North Korea nearly took out a Chinese plane carrying 220 passengers on 5 March 2014, with Chinese Southern Airlines reportedly passing through the trajectory of a North Korean missile just seven minutes after it was fired. Three days later, MH370 disappeared.

Vladimir Putin Was Behind It

It was surely only a matter of time before Vladimir Putin was accused of being involved in the disappearance of the MH370. However, what is surprising is that the accusation has come from a comparatively reputable source. Jeff Wise, a US science writer who was central to CNN’s coverage of the MH370 last year has come up with the theory based on the so-called “pings” that the plane emitted for several hours after it apparently went missing. Apparently the plane’s hijackers “spoofed” the plane’s navigation data to give off the impression that it flew south, but in fact took the Boeing 777 north and landed it in the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which is leased from Kazakhstan by Russia. One question has been left unanswered. Why Vladimir Putin would want to hijack a plane filled with passengers and land it at a Russian space port.

The First Plane on the Moon

Three weeks after MH370 went missing, that a media outlet announced that the aircraft had been found… Where? They said it was found on the moon. Drawing attention to an unexplained blip on the radar seen close to flight MH370 before it disappeared, the outlet said that… “The simplest explanation is that this is an intergalactic spacecraft that has swallowed the Boeing 777 whole and transported it to the moon for some extra- terrestrial reason.”

Plane Down… Plane Down

Soon after MH370 went missing somebody noticed that the aircraft in question was the 404th Boeing 777 to have come off the production line. The significance? On the internet, a “404 error” message is returned when a web page can’t be found. It was therefore interpreted as a hidden message about the fate of the plane, although what it might signify about its fate was unclear.

Shot Down By The United States?

A former airline director who has been investigating the disappearance of flight MH370 has claimed that the missing plane was shot down by American fighter jets who feared that it had been hijacked and was about to be used to attack the US military base on the Indian Ocean atoll of Diego Garcia.
