Want to’Experience’ a Book? There’s an App for That

Filed under: Uncategorized — Frank Fiore @ 3:07 PM

Are we on the verge of seeing eBooks become apps?

That’s quite a question. What does it mean?

I’ve written about the transmedia book or t-book or Book 3.0 before. It is important to understand a transmedia book is a stand alone application – customized to the content of the book. There is no separate “reader” and “content file” concept. The book is bought as an application from your mobile device Marketplace. You click on the icon and read. Your list of book titles is managed analogously to the way mobile phone games and applications are managed today.

Pretty heavy, huh?

Clicking on the app icon on your mobile Internet appliance opens the book and invites you to experience the next phase in book publishing.

Cyberkill is being readied by Trapdoor books to be the first t-book of its kind and hope it will usher in a new day of publishing.

  1. Hi Frank,

I downloaded the Cyberkill iBook sample and didn’t see anything in the way of a “transmedia” presence in the first fifty pages. I had thought this was to be a standalone app, but could only find the typical ebook download, not at all what you had described here. Is there something I missed, does it require the full ibook version to see transmedia in action (which would be disappointing), or are there other media elements outside the ebook that you can direct me to?

I’m interested in the concept but am skeptical about its working out in reality. Not because it cannot be done, but because I don’t see the will to really do it up right nor the general perception of it as something that has to be approached in its entirety rather than piecemeal. I would, however, like to be proved wrong.

    Thanks for humoring my interrogation!

  2. Hi Jared

Thx for your interest in this new form of publishing. The Cyberkill t-book is not out yet. We don’t expect it to be available until end of year. When it is available, I’ll post the announcement on my blog, Facebook page and Linkedin.
