Hack or Novelist?

Filed under: On Writing — Frank Fiore @ 11:32 AM

In the song ‘Paperback Writer’, the Beatles take one side of the issue.

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It’s a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I’ll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer.

The paperback writer of the Beatles is into it for the money.  The writer here will do whatever it takes to sell a book. Writing for the market instead of for posterity is the rule

So, are you the ‘show me the money’ kind of writer or ‘I ‘d rather die poor and be recognized long after my death’ type of writer?

Take the poll.

  1. I seem to lean toward volunteer – idealist!

  2. I want to finish it. Period. It’s taking over my life. And that’s not saying much. Not good. Not good.

  3. Can’t I be both?
